Our work with children will sometimes bring us into contact with
confidential information. We respect confidentiality in the following
ways.
Parents will have access to the records of their own children but
will not have access to the records of any other child.
Staff will not discuss individual children, other than for the
purposes of curriculum planning or group management, with people other
than the parents/carers of that child.
Information given to the Proprietor or Manager of the nursery will
not be passed on to other members of staff without permission.
Any anxieties relating to a child's personal safety will be kept in
a confidential file and will not be generally accessible to the staff
Students on placement at the nursery will be
advised of our policy on confidentiality and required to respect it.

Our nursery is open to all children and families.
All children will be respected and their individuality and potential
recognised, valued and nurtured. Activities and the use of play
equipment offer children opportunities to develop in an environment
free from prejudice and discrimination. Appropriate opportunities will
be given to children to explore, acknowledge and value similarities
between themselves and others.
Resources are chosen to give children a balanced view of the world
and an appreciation of the rich diversity of a multi-racial society.
Materials are selected to help children to develop their self-respect
and to respect other people by avoiding stereotypes and derogatory
pictures or messages about any group of people.

All children are special but some have additional
individual needs. All the children in our nursery, irrespective of
special needs, are encouraged where necessary to participate. All are
encouraged to take part in all the activities.
We provide a welcoming, happy, friendly and
supportive environment with appropriate learning opportunities, for
all children. Our system of observation and record keeping enables us
to monitor children's needs and progress on an individual basis. If it
is felt that a child's needs cannot me met in the nursery without the
support of a one-to-one worker we will do our best to access funds to
employ one. Where a child with special needs is accommodated in the
nursery it is our policy to adapt the routine and environment so that
the child can be part of the group and is not made to feel separated
or excluded.
Our assistant manager, Mrs Pauline Muench, is our designated
Special Education Needs Co-ordinator.

We are very proud that a large percentage of our
staff are qualified in childcare. You may be aware that there are many
different qualifications in this field, and not all of our staff hold
the same qualifications. Where appropriate, we may employ an
unqualified person who will then complete their training and
assessment with us.
Our staff are regularly monitored by their line
manager on an informal basis, and have an annual assessment. First Aid
courses are regularly attended, in-service training is carried out by
qualified staff, and regular staff meetings allow staff to contribute
to shared curriculum planning.
We employ a 'Key Worker' system. This
aids the parents, as they have a particular person with whom to
discuss their child, in addition to the access that they have at any
time to the Proprietor or Deputy Manager. The Key Worker system helps
the child to settle and to feel comfortable; it also ensures that the
Proprietor and Deputy Manager have one person to refer to who is
keenly aware of the progress, moods, likes and dislikes, and problems,
if any, of a child.

The Nursery encourages
healthy eating. Fresh fruit is provided as snacks. Children bring a packed lunch to the
nursery for their mid-day meal. All day care and after school children
receive a healthy hot meal at tea-time. Special dietary requirements are
catered for and should be discussed during settling in. A sample menu
can be seen at the link.

Adults supervise all children at all times. An
accident book is kept in which any accident resulting in an injury is
recorded. Parents/Carers will be asked to read the accident book and
to sign that they have done so.
The Nursery is inspected annually by OFSTED and
periodically by an Environmental Health Officer. You can be assured
that all registered private nurseries are required to meet stringent
guidelines regarding safety. Some of the measures that we take include
stair-gates, smoke alarms, finger guards on door hinge lines, regular
fire practices, fire extinguishers, safety or covered glass and so on.
Our equipment is checked each day and broken or damaged equipment is
replaced.
The Nursery is a no-smoking zone.
Correctly stocked First Aid kits are available at all times.

To prevent the spread of infection the staff ensure that the
following good practices are observed by everyone.
Hands washed after use of the toilet.
Hands washed before eating and drinking.
Individual paper towels used and disposed of correctly.
Wet or soiled clothes rinsed and returned home in a plastic bag.
All tables cleaned with anti-bacterial cleaner before the children
eat or drink. Food and drinks prepared in the kitchen area in
accordance with environmental Health Officer's recommendations.
Children will not be accepted into the Nursery, or will be sent
home, if they are suffering from;
Sickness and diarrhoea (48hrs. exclusion.)
Eye infections.
High temperature.
Unidentified rashes or spots.
Medicine will only be dispensed where the Parent/Carer has signed
the day book. At least two members of staff, at any time, will hold
valid First Aid certificates.

New Road Nursery staff work toward allowing each
individual child's potential to be encouraged and supported so that
all children achieve their maximum in social, emotional, cultural,
physical and intellectual development.
Within the group all children are supported in
developing their potential at their own pace. By means of
development-appropriate play activities and a high level of individual
adult input, we follow all aspects of the Foundation Stage of the
National Curriculum.

In both small and large groups, children are
encouraged to extend their vocabulary and fluency by talking and
listening and by hearing and responding to stories, songs and rhymes.
Children are helped to understand that written symbols carry meaning,
to be aware of the purpose of writing and, when they are ready, to use
drawn and written symbols for themselves. Well-stocked book corners
give each child the opportunity and encouragement to become familiar
with books, to be able to handle them and to be aware of their uses,
both for reference and as a source of stories and pictures.

Within a nurturing environment, children are
individually supported in developing confidence, autonomy and
self-respect. They are encouraged to work and to concentrate
independently and also to take part in the life of the group, sharing
and co-operating with other children and adults. Through activities,
conversation and practical example, they learn acceptable ways to
express their own feelings and to have respect for the feelings of
others. All children are given the opportunity, as appropriate, to
take responsibility for themselves and also for the group, its members
and its property.

Through adult supported practical experience,
children become familiar with sorting, matching, ordering, sequencing
and counting activities that form the basis for early mathematics. As
they use their developing mathematical understanding to solve
practical problems, children are assisted to use the vocabulary of
mathematics, identifying objects by shape, size, position and number.
Songs, games and picture books help children become aware of number
sequences, and, when they are ready, to use simple mathematical
operations such as addition.

A safe and stimulating environment allows children
to experiment and to explore a range of natural and manufactured
materials. They learn to observe the features of objects and
substances, recognising differences, patterns and similarities, and to
share and record their findings. Children are assisted in exploring
and understanding their environment, both within the group and also
within the wider community. A range of safe and well maintained
equipment enables children to expand their technological
understanding, using simple tools and techniques as appropriate to
achieve their intentions and to solve problems.

A range of equipment and
opportunities, both indoors and outdoors, allow children to develop
confidence and enjoyment in the development of their own physical
skills. A very high level of adult supervision enables children safely
to create and meet physical challenges, developing increasing skill in
moving, climbing and balancing. At the same time, children are
supported in the development of fine motor skills required to use
tools, including pens and pencils, and to handle small objects with
increasing control and precision.

Children are encouraged to use a large range of
resources in order to express their own ideas and feelings. Art
equipment, including paint, glue, crayons and pencils as well as
natural and discarded materials, provides for an exploration of colour,
shape and texture and the development of skills in painting, drawing
and collage. Children join in with music and stories, and there are
many opportunities for imaginative role play, both individually and as
part of a group.
